A Partial List of Leonese and Castilian Given Names 1050-1200

The following is a list of the given names of the lords temporal or spiritual in the courts of Leon and Castile from approximately 1050 to 1200. It suffers -- in addition to whatever deficiencies exist in my compilation -- any errors extant in the sources. While I have no hesitation in using these sources, you have been warned.

Other names are used in the sources, but I have not included them for several reasons. Most are omitted because I find them only in the patronymic and I am insufficiently sure of the original form. In other cases, I have doubts whether the name is either that of a saint (of unknown origin and possibly not in current use) or is primarily associated with individuals not from this region. The list of saint's names is substantial; that of "foreigners" is quite small.
