This article covers names found in the Feet of Fines for Cornwall from the late 12th century and the 13th century as found in Cornwall Feet of Fines Part I Richard I - Edward III 1195-1377 edited by Joseph Hambley Rowe and published in 1914. Feet of Fines are records of land transfers. I have included the names of the litigants, their representatives, if any, and anyone mentioned in the individual Feet of Fines that was not clearly not from Cornwall. I have put a number after each name which is the number of times the name appeared in the Feet of Fines in the dates I chose to focus on. Some individuals appeared more than once, if involved in more than one land transfer. I did not attempt to winnow out such duplications because there were fathers and sons with the same names.
For the most part, the given names in use in these Feet of Fines are the same ones found elsewhere in 13th century England. There are a few exceptions, and it is on them I have focused my efforts. Most of the given names have been normalized into modern English from the Latinized form in the original record. Names marked with an asterisk in the tables below can be found in their un-normalized dated forms in E. G. Withycombe’s The Oxford Dictionary of English Christian Names. Dates have been provided for names not in Withycombe; most of these do not appear to be normalized.

The bynames list from Cornwall shows the usual patterns for Middle English bynames: relationship bynames usually patronymics (indicating who the person’s father is) or matronymics (indicating who the person’s mother is), locatives, occupational bynames and descriptive bynames. In the original source, most of the patronymics and matronymic probably contained filius (for sons) or filia (for daughters) which has been translated into English as “son of” and “daughter of.” Locatives are usually proceeded by de or occasionally atte, but some do not contain any preposition. While most of the locatives are Cornish, some are French and a handful of others elsewhere in southern England. I tried to group variants of the same byname together. The original translator was a little inconsistent in his translation of the original Latin, which is particularly on display with the variants of the occupational byname Clerk (though some of that may be due to the byname being variously originally written in French or Latin).
